Grace wouldn't come to dinner because she was busy working on her homework. Which, by the way, is optional and not due until next Monday. It is an open-ended math problem about bridges, for example: if 2 piers can hold 3 cars and 3 piers can hold 6 cars, how many piers do you need to hold 54 cars? Our kid sat there and made a chart to figure it out. And then she drew her own bridge and made a chart about how many cars each number of piers can hold. And we let her finish before she came to dinner, because one should never, ever interrupt a first grader who is excited about math.
