Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

Gracie on her first day at the Friends School – 9/5/07

We decided to change preschools three weeks before the start of school. After much discussion and soul searching, Adam and I decided that Gracie’s old preschool was just not the best fit for her. This was a hard decision – after all, we really have no clue what went on at preschool last year. All we knew was that Gracie never seemed to be very excited about going to school, and she hardly talked about it at all. Adam and I came to the conclusion that for us, the main goal of preschool is to foster a joy of learning, and a love of school. So we found a situation that seemed better suited to her – fewer kids, more teacher interaction, more group activities, and LOTS of time spent outside (exploring the ISLAND on which the school is located – how cool is that?!).

After two days of preschool, all I can say is: mission accomplished. Gracie is excited to go to school and when I pick her up, she happily chats away, describing all of the wonderful things she got to do with her new friends. So far, this includes: beginning each morning by saying hello to a huge elm tree; eating snack OUTSIDE, sitting in a circle with all of her friends; exploring the beach; painting; roaring like a tiger; meeting some big kids and having a contest to see which group could sing the loudest; and reading books in the ‘peace corner’. Today, I was horrified when I was a few minutes late to pick her up (thanks to Tess’s very tardy doctor) – but she was very happily sitting with her new friends (the ones who stay for a full day) while they ate lunch. And as we left, Gracie asked, "Mommy, next time can I stay for lunch, too?" I can’t begin to describe how nice it was to hear that.

Yesterday, as Gracie and I made our now daily visit to the garden, baby Tess spotted us picking a small red tomato. She pointed at it and said “mo’?” (translation: more please, or, can I pleeease have some?) I handed it to her and she immediately took a bite. And then she held onto it, tightly, for about half an hour, taking the occasional bite, until she had eaten the entire thing. For some reason, it had never occurred to me to eat something immediately after picking it. I mean, shouldn’t you at least wash it first?? But that smart 15-month old knew something good when she saw it. So today, I took both girls out there with me to pick 2 ears of corn for dinner (obviously, we would have liked more, but that’s all that was ready!). When we sat down to shuck them, Gracie declared that she likes raw corn, and promptly took a bite. I suppressed my urge to stop her (I am trying SO hard not to pass my own issues on to her!), and instead, I encouraged her. Not one to miss a snack, Tess immediately started repeating (rather emphatically) “mo’?”. So she and her sister sat facing each other, taking bites of the freshly picked corn. It must have tasted really good, because Tess became impatient if Gracie took too long with her turn. Watching my little girls share BOTH ears of the corn we had grown in our family garden was one of the sweetest moments I have witnessed as a parent. But now what will we eat for dinner??

“I can’t wait to get my hair cut. I LOVE lollipops.”

Great. I love lollipops too – especially the sugar rush that comes with them.

“Mommy, does Meg know we’re coming?”

Yes, and I’m sure your visit will be the highlight of her day.

    “Hi Meg, I LOVE lollipops.”

You better quit charming her or she’ll give you two of them.

    “Meg, where do you sleep?”

Honey, she does NOT live at the hair salon.

    “Meg, where do you live?”

I repeat, she does NOT live at the hair salon.

“Meg, who are you married too?”

Honey, lay off the personal questions or you might not get ANY lollipops.

    “Meg, I like your buttons.”

    Oh no, THREE lollipops.

“Meg, I like your dress. It’s pretty.”

Oh no – please Meg, ARE YOU FINISHED YET?
