Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

Grace has been waking up pretty consistently around 5:30am for the past two weeks. This is NOT a good thing for any of us. The odd thing is that she doesn’t seem tired as she goes through the day, but she has also been consistently taking an approximately one-hour nap. This morning, after being awakened by Grace at 5:15, and then by Tess at 5:30 (although Tess went back to sleep for two hours), I decided that this early morning nonsense simply MUST stop – so that I have may have any chance at all of clinging to my sanity. I came to the conclusion that the early morning wake-up call is taking a harder toll on my ability to cope with the day than a napless afternoon would. And so the ‘no nap’ experiment was born. It is only logical that if she does not take an afternoon nap, Gracie will require more sleep at night – right? I’ll keep you posted.

Of course, I still need some kind of afternoon break to regain my composure and regroup for the hours before Adam comes home. So, I told Grace that she had to have quiet time – she had to stay in her room for 30 minutes – and she had to be quiet. If she could do this, she would be permitted to watch one of her taped shows at the conclusion of the 30-minute period. Much to my surprise, she stayed in her room – quietly – for the entire time. When I went upstairs to release her, Grace was wearing polka-dot tights – and nothing else. And her dress-up clothes were strewn about her room. I asked what she had been up to, and she replied: “I decorated my room for Valentine’s Day.” Oh, of course. And then she explained: “I waved my magic wand and my clothes flew were I wanted them to go.” Ah yes, it was a ‘no nap’ miracle.

On Sunday, Gracie had her first soccer practice – and she loved it. Even though she is about 6 inches shorter than the rest of the “munchkin” players, and is one of only two girls out of ten kids, she really seemed to have fun. Not only did it involve running around and playing games, she also made a new friend (typical Grace), and she got to have bonding time with her daddy. Playing soccer is a very big deal to her, and she has been looking forward to it for a long time. On Monday, she went to Meeting for Worship at school, and the Head of School asked if anyone had anything to share. Confident little Grace raised her hand and told the entire school that she had played soccer for the first time, and that “the white team won one goal.” Grace was on the white team, however, it was actually the blue team that scored a goal. I guess all of that stuff about “it’s not who wins or loses that matters, it’s how you play the game” comes a little later!

Tess went to the doctor last week for her 18-month checkup (I realize she’s almost 20-months old, but I’m doing the best I can, people!). I was so proud when the nurse weighed her, and declared her to be a whopping 20 pounds and 12 ounces! Finally, I thought, I have a good eater and an average-sized baby. I just knew that she was fitting into clothes that Gracie didn’t wear until she was two years old. And then the doctor informed me that Tess is in the 5th percentile for weight. Another smaller than average kid. But Tess has consistently been in the 5th percentile, and certainly looks healthy, so there is no need to worry. She is just small, as are most of the women in our family – although we seem to be progressively getting bigger, so there’s hope! Anyway, I certainly can’t say I was shocked to discover that Tess is not really the stocky tot I thought her to be – I guess I was just hoping she’d end up having a physical advantage over Grace. But I’m really not that worried about her – Tess is already starting to show us that she’ll be able to hold her own against her big sister. More on that to come…

This New Year’s Eve, we started a family tradition of a Yule Log celebration. For us, this simply meant sitting by the fire together and talking about our wishes for the new year, then tossing a sprig of holly into the flame. Adam and I had pretty standard wishes about health, happiness, and peace. But Grace was thinking about something else entirely: “I wish that my birthday would come more often.” An interesting thought – and it would probably be easier to achieve than world peace – but for now I think we’ll stick with one birthday a year.

Happy New Year to you all! We wish you a year full of hugs, laughter, peace, good health – and lots of cake and presents!

After a long break, my fingers are rested and I am ready to once again regale you with tales of my two sweet, and spunky, girls. But first, a little bit about Christmas…

Christmas with two little kids is fun, but it’s even more fun with a house full of people you love and two little kids. Lots of laughter, many cooks in the kitchen, and a tiny bit of chaos – Christmas as it should be.

We had a fire in the fireplace on Christmas Eve, much to Grace’s distress: "Oh no! You’ll cook Santa!" But Santa did come, and Grace was very excited to find that he even brought her the two things she had asked him for: a fairy wand and lollipops (will she always be this easy to please?!). What she wanted most, though, was a watch, which makes her feel very grown up – now she just needs to learn to tell time! The last gift she opened, a box of dress-up clothes, provided immediate entertainment – for everyone! Tess had no idea what was happening, but sensed the excitement and, as is her style, was just happy to be along for the ride.

It was beyond wonderful to spend several days in a row with people who are so important to us. We relaxed, cooked and ate good food, played outside a little (all this snow is good for something!) and just generally enjoyed each other’s company. It was all great, and now that everyone is gone, the house seems a little too quiet. So please, family, come back soon!!

Grace told me the other day that her baby doll, Hofia (pronounced Ho-fi-ah), didn’t know about Christmas. So I told Grace that she should explain it to her. And she said, "Christmas is when all of your family comes to your house to visit you." That’s what is important to this four-year old — not all of the fuss about Santa and presents (although Santa is good, too!). I hope that we can help her hold on to that simple truth for a long time, because there really is nothing more important than time spent with those you love. That being said, I am signing off for a few days, since many of my loved ones (and half of my blog audience!) will be here with me. I wish you peace, joy and a wonderful holiday with the people you love.

  • Of our backyard… We seem to have become a pit stop on the daily turkey trek – no matter what the weather is like. And last week I saw our resident owl for the second time – in the middle of the day! We see deer all the time on our neighbors land, but not so often in our own backyard – perhaps thanks to Maggie, our very ferocious guard dog.

It is cold here. Really cold. And there is a lot of snow. I hate to say this, but I really don’t like winter. I don’t like that we can’t spend all afternoon outside playing. Or that we have to bring our jackets into the kitchen to warm up twenty minutes before we go anywhere because our entryway has no heat. I also don’t like having to spend ten minutes bundling the girls up just to walk out to the car. However, our surroundings are beautiful when covered with a blanket of fresh snow. And I love Gracie’s enthusiasm for making snow angels and footprints in the snow, and for rolling down the mountain of snow built by the plow. And who doesn’t enjoy warming up with a mug of hot cocoa by the fireplace? So I guess winter isn’t really so bad after all. How can you hate it when you have an adorable snow angel of your own to enjoy the season with? (And don’t worry, Tess, next year you’ll like playing in the snow, too!)

Baby sister will play. On big sister’s bed, and with big sister’s toys…

It’s funny how Tess instinctively goes for the one thing that Gracie really doesn’t want her to play with – her baby doll!

On Saturday we attended a winter event at our favorite local farm, along with Grace’s good buddy Violet and her family. The girls listened to a story and then made pinecone birdfeeders and strings of popcorn and cranberries. Afterwards, we all trekked into the woods, through the snow, to hang up our treats for the birds and squirrels. There was a bonfire, hot cocoa, and time to visit the animals in the barn. This was Tess’s favorite part – she had never before gotten so close to sheep, goats and chickens (or guinea hens!). What a perfect way to spend a beautiful winter morning!
