Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

Today it was 50 degrees and sunny! And we noticed an oasis of grass around the swingset! So Grace put on her rain boots and we climbed through the snow to the swings. I swear that kid laughed and squealed with joy for a solid five minutes as she finally, finally, got to swing again. Then her boots (accidentally) fell off and her socks (inexplicably) fell off and she was reveling in the sun and the breeze on her toes.

And then she slid down the slide right into a pile of snow and said, “Why isn’t it spring at my house yet?”

Grace continues to get creative with scotch tape. The other day she made herself kitty earrings – I drew the kitty faces and cut them out, and she designed the method of attaching them to her ears. Pretty smart, and pretty darn hilarious. She received quite a few compliments on them when she accompanied me and Tess to our music class. Of course, that made her very proud.

While we were in Austin, the weather was a bit windy, and Grace was able to fly a kite on two different days! I’m not sure which she loved more – the pink kitty kite her Nana bought or running around like crazy – but it doesn’t matter. I do know that she thought she was pretty cool – on more than one occasion she purposefully ran straight through an informal soccer game that was going on in the park, as if to say, “Look at me!” Typical Grace. Her spunky self-confidence amazes me sometimes.

Tess learned how to make bubbles while we were in the land of sun and heat (can you hear the longing in my voice?). And Myrrh gave the girls each a very fancy bubble wand – that makes amazing bubbles – which added to the fun. Only first Tess had to get used to having the bubble liquid drip onto her hands – something our little neat freak did not enjoy. Once her daddy taught her to wipe her messy hands on mommy’s jeans, she had a great time blowing bubbles (thanks, Adam).

Grace had so much fun at the ranch that she did her best to become a mini-cowgirl. Perhaps she was hoping we’d just leave her there, so she could spend her days riding ponies and standing around campfires. She acquired her very own cowgirl hat, and her very own stuffed (purple) pony, which she insisted on carrying with her everywhere she went. And because she was already carrying a flowered purse and a fancy bubble wand, this made running and playing a bit cumbersome. Of course, this didn’t slow her down at all.

What is that funny sticker on Grace’s dress, you ask? Oh, that’s the “I got an x-ray” sticker from the emergency room where we spent four glorious hours – instead of attending margarita (!!) and mexican food night at the ranch. Since she refused to walk for an entire day, we thought she might have an actual injury. But not to worry, she just had an ear infection – and presumably sore muscles from toting around all of her mini-cowgirl accessories. Either that or it was some weird reaction to all of those roasted marshmallows she ate. It’s a good thing she’s not a real cowgirl.

What’s a visit to a dude ranch without a little horse riding? Each day we were there, the girls had the opportunity to ride Jazz, a very calm, sweet pony who provided us with a great deal of excitement. Tess only rode him once, but had fun even though she found the experience somewhat perplexing. Grace, on the other hand, loved every minute with Jazz, and rode him until it was time for him to go home. Maybe I can convince Adam to build a horse barn on our land once the chicken coop is finished…

Well, we’re back home from Texas safe and sound, but a little tired. It is going to take us a few days to recover from running around in the warm sunshine – and we’ll need a few more days to get over the shock of returning to 30-degree weather and snow. Grace put it best yesterday when she said, “I’m not used to walking on ice!” Our trip was wonderful and I have some stories to share with you – but first I have to wade through the 600+ photos I took while we were gone. Meanwhile, here’s a preview…

We’re in Texas for 9 days of basking in the warm sunshine, running around barefoot in the grass, and listening to the birds sing. Oh yeah, we’ll be hanging out with beloved family members and riding horses, too! We made it here safe and sound – but exhausted – and the bright sun, heat, and blooming flowers have already pushed the stress of the travel day out of our minds. Adios, my friends, and stay tuned for some dude ranch photos later next week!

I gave Tess a paintbrush and a tray full of paint for the first time the other day. I finally decided that the neat freak in me had deprived her of that experience for long enough. In true Tess fashion, she made a beautiful painting (four beautiful paintings, actually), and didn’t even need to have her hands washed afterwards.

On the other hand, the experiential learner that is her big sister had paint all over her hands, and the counter. But her paintings were beautiful, too.

Grace spent quite a while the other morning making me a birthday cake out of play-doh. She presented it to me on a tray, while singing ‘Happy Birthday’ in Spanish. Her Spanish sounded a lot more like Yiddish, and my birthday isn’t for another five months, but fine details don’t matter much to Grace. Besides, it’s the thought that counts.

Tess also made a birthday cake for me, then she pressed it to her cheek as if she were trying to soak up its heartbreaking beauty (she must have learned this from her big sister).
