Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

We love to take walks together as a family. Actually, this predates our children – Adam and I used to hike together in the mountains and foothills with the dogs, fueled by coffee and a leisurely breakfast. Things are much different now, but we still walk together every week.

When we lived in Colorado, we always went on the same hike up at Caribou, and our destination was a huge tree that we would hug before heading back down the mountain. Now we're teaching the girls to hug trees, too – and to look at flowers and explore tide pools and observe wildlife (on this particular walk, we saw a nesting osprey). I think we're succeeding in our efforts to raise two little nature lovers.

When we reach a bridge, Grace likes to pretend she's a 'grumpy old troll': she sings a song, does a little dance, and makes up a riddle that must be answered correctly before we can cross. This is pretty cute, and now she's passing the tradition on to Tess, which makes it even cuter.

Meanwhile, Tess is discovering how much fun it is to blaze her own trail – the age of two comes with its own little independent streak. I like it, and I have a feeling that our family walks are about to become even more interesting. Back when we first started hiking together, I don't think Adam and I would have been able to imagine outings like this, but I'd trade a leisurely breakfast for two tree-hugging, grumpy old trolls any day.

It was a bit cool at the beach the other day, but that didn't stop us from having fun. I like to think of it as a beach "warm-up" day. We buried the girls' legs in sand – Grace wanted her whole body buried, but I insisted that she would need to be wearing a swimsuit to do that. I need to ease into the whole beach scene, but Grace and Tess are pretty much ready to dive in head (or toes) first…

Grace: Mommy, I love you more than you love me.

    Me: No, I don't think that's possible.

Grace: How much do you love me?

Me [Trying to come up with something different than my standard "All the way to New Zealand and back."]: I love you infinity.

    Grace: What's infimity?

Me: It means that it never ends.

Grace: What about if you die?

    Me: I'll still love you.

Grace: What about if the whole country dies?

    Me: I'll still love you.

Grace: What about if the whole world dies?

    Me: I'll still love you.

Grace: What about if the globe dies?

Me: Honey, that would never happen, but if it did, I would still love you.

Grace: Mommy, can you please not love me so much?

Me: Why not? It's good to love someone so much.

Grace: Okay – I'll tell you how much you love me. If I was you, and you wrapped your arms all the way around my head, that's how much you love me.

Me: Okay honey. [You're right – that much, plus infinity.]

I'm beginning to think that it's physically impossible to get a photo of the four of us when we are all smiling and looking at the camera. Don't worry, though – I'll keep trying!

One of Tess’s birthday gifts was a red wagon. As soon as she saw it, she said: “Mine!” She loves being pulled around by her sister, but I think it will be a while before she can return the favor (although this won’t stop her from trying)…

Every night before bed, Grace holds the chicks. They no longer fit snugly into her little hands, and she has to stand the chick on her leg and put a hand gently over the chick’s back so that she doesn’t flap away. Rosie and Bernadette, the Buff Orpingtons, are the smallest and the gentlest of the chicks, and they both seem to enjoy being held – Bernadette still falls asleep sometimes in our hands. Sally and Stella, the Barred Rocks, peep like crazy whenever they are removed from their cozy home, and flap their wings a bit at first, but eventually settle in. Lucy and Penelope, the Easter Eggers, are the biggest and most active chicks. They flap their wings and seem to find great joy in escaping from their human mommas – Lucy has run under the dining room table, and Penelope actually flapped right out of the box tonight when I was removing another chick. Today Lucy climbed up onto Gracie’s shoulder and then walked across to the other shoulder. Our animal-loving four-year old remained very calm and thought this was hilarious. And indeed it was.

Yesterday, when Adam arrived home, we surprised the girls by wheeling out two new bikes that had been hidden in the garage – a tricycle for birthday girl Tess, and a two-wheeler with training wheels for Grace. Grace was immediately thrilled and promptly took a ride down the driveway, and even down the road a bit. Not only is the bike purple, with streamers hanging from the handlebars – it also makes her feel like a big kid.

Sweet Tess’s tricycle has a pushbar so that we can push her around until she figures out how to use the pedals herself. I had her test drive this trike at the toy store a couple of times, and each time she sat down and then said, “All done!” However, she pointed excitedly at the tricycles every time we went to the store, and I am determined to teach her how to ride one, so her lack of enthusiasm for pedaling did not deter me. When she received the gift, she enjoyed being pushed around, but was distressed by the fact that she did not have a helmet like her big sister (note the hand on her head for emphasis). So, today I bought her a helmet. I mean, the kid does have a point – safety first, right?!

    To my little love,

You make me happy every day with your gentle soul and your sweet smile. Your funny faces and little-sister antics make me laugh. Your ever-present sense of joy and your kind heart amaze me. You are my constant buddy, and while I wish I could hold you like this forever, I love watching you grow and getting to know you even more. Happy Birthday, and thank you for being exactly you.

    I love you,
    Mommy

A lovely Mother’s Day brunch with my mom, my girls and Adam; and an even more lovely walk along the ocean, soaking in the beautiful weather with my two favorite rays of sunshine… Perfect.

  • Why can’t children ever manage to make it to the bathroom to throw up, instead of making a colossal mess all over the stairs?

Why does your husband find it funny to make jokes about throw up (“We’ve got ourselves a PUKER!”) while you are scrubbing away at the ruined carpeting, instead of offering to help? (Wait, there is an answer for this one – he’s a male.)

Why do children only throw up after meals of pizza and chocolate ice cream, and not after they’ve eaten something benign like bananas or toast?

Why must children throw up at 9:30pm on the night you and your husband have finally decided you must go to bed early in order to be able to function properly the next day?

Why must children get sick the night before a day when you have a lot of fun things planned – things that were supposed to happen while the child was at school?

Why must a sweet little girl be reduced to a sobbing mess when all she wants to do is run and play in the first truly summer-like days of spring?

What is it about balloons and videos that induces a euphoric, pain-free trance – and why haven’t the medical professionals figured out a way to bottle that magic so that children can be spared the misery of a nasty stomach bug?
