Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

  • Have You Ever Had a Rock?

Have you ever had a rock that shines?
One that shines, like a person in the night?
One that you can write with?
One that you like; that you can put in your pocket and keep close to you?
One that you really love, and never want to give?
What do you like? What do you like?
I like a rock that glows.

It was one of those days when we looked at each other and said, "yeah, we live here."

This is how Tess greeted me at the end of school today. They spent a good part of the day putting together a Leprechaun play, and even made a pot of gold. Can't wait to see the final product on Monday.

On Saturday, Grace and I headed for the mountains (on the New Hampshire border) for our second annual dogsledding adventure. Ever since our very first excursion one year ago, Grace has been talking about doing it again. She remembered everything about our last trip, and was thrilled to be reunited with Corie, her favorite sled dog. We opted for a longer excursion this time — almost five hours — and were treated to a picnic lunch in the snow. The scenery was beautiful, the dogs were sweet, and my little musher stood on the back of the sled the entire time. When we got home, she immediately researched dog sled kits online, and has started saving her money for a sled of her very own (while dreaming of a dog that will pull her).

Yesterday when I arrived to pick Tess up from school, she was all dressed up in her winter coat and boots, with her backpack on her back, looking up at me through this mask she made herself. That image is going to stay with me for a long, long time.
