Grace is still the mother hen and chief egg collector, but Tess has suddenly taken an interest in the eggs as well. I'm not sure if it's because she knows Grace loves to collect them, or if she truly finds it exciting, but she has become quite the little helper — as long as the chickens don't get too close to her!
About a week ago we started getting our first green eggs, and today for the first time, we found four eggs at once! We have eaten two entire quiches in the span of 8 days, and have now decided that it is time to start giving eggs away. That is, if we can tear them away from our very proud egg collectors. -

We took the girls to vote with us yesterday, because we wanted them to be a part of history, to be able to say that they were there when this country finally decided to choose hope and vote for change. They were there when we proved that anyone can truly be anything they want to be. I know they are probably to young to remember this day, but I also know history won't let them forget it.And now we can all uncross our fingers and breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Once again, we joined Grace's best buddy in Freeport for trick-or-treating at the shops along Main Street. We had prepared Tess for the event by teaching her what to say, and she was excited to get started, although she didn't know exactly why. She hesitated at our first stop (see below), but as luck would have it, the second store we visited was handing out M&M's — her very favorite treat! (and the only candy she's ever had) — so she quickly learned that this Halloween thing is a pretty good deal. Grace, who had attended a Halloween party at school earlier in the day, immediately got into the spirit of things, excitedly shouting "Trick-or-treat!" as she entered each store. The next day, Tess carried her bag of "special treats" with her wherever she went (including the coffee shop), and then hasn't mentioned it since. And Grace didn't even complain when I removed most of the candy from her bag and told her she could have one piece of the remaining candy each day, dependent upon good behavior. As it turns out, all she really wanted anyway was the gum. For these girls, the novelty of running around in a costume collecting candy still outweighs the joy of the actual candy — but I have a feeling that next year might be a little different.

I won't be posting this week, while we enjoy a visit from "Bobby and Motmaw" (aka Grandpa and Grandma). So far we've hiked Bradbury Mountain, baked awesome Halloween cookies, and enjoyed several "performances" by Grace and Tess. Good times. You can bet I'll be back on Friday night with some Halloween photos!

I swear I stood in front of the chicken coop for a full two minutes this afternoon, shocked to see THREE eggs in the nest box. I would have been no more surprised if someone had just informed me that Grace had been nominated to the Supreme Court (by the way, she does want to be president, so she can "take care of all of the animals in the world," but that's a story for another time). I knew that Sally and Penelope had started laying (Penelope laid her first one on Saturday, while sitting up on the roost) but I truly have no idea where the third egg came from, as none of the other hens look ready to me (but then again, we chicken farmers don't know everything). I didn't let the chickens out this morning as usual because it was raining, and when I opened up the coop at lunchtime — surprise! — there were the eggs. And miraculously, our smart little hens laid their eggs exactly where I wanted them to — maybe chicken farming isn't so tough after all!
