Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

Yesterday when I picked Grace up from school, she very proudly showed me a twig she had collected from a white pine. She explained to me that we were going to make tea with the "sprigs," and when we got home, she showed me how. She poured the water and separated the needles and got the honey. She poured a mug for Adam and set it aside for when he got home. The tea was… interesting. But what struck me about all of this was how very grown up Grace seemed. She was interested and helpful, and insightful and funny. She was lovely.

Later we met friends for dinner, and Grace was polite and friendly, and very conversational. My friend turned to me and said, "When did Grace turn 12?"

When we got home from dinner and saw Adam, Grace gave him his tea and talked about her "girlfriends" at school. Afterwards, he turned to me and said, "When did she become a teenager?"

Obviously she's not a teenager yet, and we certainly don't wish her to become one anytime soon. But she is almost 6. And I think I'm going to like 6 quite a bit.

On Thursday, it snowed for the first time. The girls were very excited, and Grace was inspired to compose a snow song:

    "It's snowing, it's snowing…

    How beautiful and softly.

    Brrrrr I am cold

    In my little log cabin."

They both happily went off to school wearing their snowsuits, boots, hats and mittens. Of course, it wasn't snowing at all at their school, and by the time they came home, the snow at our house had melted. Major disappointment. I tried to explain that there will come a time when they wish the snow would go away, and there was no need to rush it, but their little brains don't have any recollection of just how long winter is. Lucky kids.

We took full advantage of the 60+ degree weather today. We walked at the park, played at two different playgrounds, did some outdoor chores, and… played some serious soccer. Grace got the ball out of the shed, and the next thing I knew, both girls had changed into their "soccer clothes," and Adam had his soccer shoes on. It was hilarious, and fun, and very, very sweet.

If we had a barn in our backyard, we would have loaded Lilly-T up in the minivan weeks ago and brought her home with us. Grace and I are both smitten.

Last year on election day, Grace's school voted on a mascot. The red fox won, and now Grace's classroom has its own resident (stuffed) fox, named Foxy. Each weekend, a kindergartner gets to take Foxy home for special one-on-one time. Foxy comes with a journal, and each child (with help) takes a page to chronicle his/her adventures with Foxy. Last weekend, it was Grace's turn — this was especially exciting since it was Halloween weekend. Grace drew and cut out a red nose and taped it over his black nose, and he wore a frilly headband around his neck so that he could be a clown for trick-or-treating. I'm pretty sure Foxy can't wait to come back to our house — just as soon as he wakes up from his nap.

On Monday, Tess wrote her name for the very first time. I wrote an example and explained how to do it, and then she just did it. Like she had been waiting for someone to ask her to do it. And she wrote it right next to a portrait of her gymnastics coach — see the gray hair and the "mixed-up colors" (tie-dyed) shirt? She insisted on giving this very important piece of history to her gymnastics coach, but that's okay.

Later in the day, she wrote her name again — twice — all by herself. In fact, she specifically asked me not to look at her, or even talk to her, while she did it. And now I'm wondering why I never thought to show her how to do this before.

Yesterday she drew a self-portrait, then wrote her name on both sides of the figure. I don't think she has a clue how exciting this is, but I do. And I think it's pretty awesome.

When Grace arrived home home from school today, I gave her a tiara. She accidentally broke her original tiara a couple of weeks ago, so when I saw them for half price at the store today, I bought her one. That may have been the best three dollars I have ever spent.

Puppy and Kitty were very cute.

But because it was Halloween, they could also be very scary. (But because Puppy insisted on wearing her favorite purple dress and purple tights and Halloween socks with her costume, she was still more cute than scary.)

Puppy and Kitty went trick-or-treating with their best buddy, Dalmation — after a little playtime, of course.

Puppy used her biggest, saddest puppy eyes to elicit many "awwwws" and lots of yummy candy.

Kitty stayed brave by holding Dalmation's hand the entire time.

At the end of their long, busy day, Puppy and Kitty excitedly surveyed the candy they had collected from the Freeport merchants. Kitty, who believes more is always better, counted her pieces — 33! And Puppy, who who likes to be organized, lined up her favorites — the lollipops!

It was a very good day!

Okay, maybe not-so-scary kitty. But the kindergartners made a "spooky path" outside their classroom in honor of Halloween, and the rest of the school went through it today. There were ghosts hanging in trees, a pumpkin graveyard, and a huge spiderweb. Grace hid behind a tree and jumped out and scared kids as they walked by. She and Batman made a great scary pair.
