The sleeping bags were a Valentine's Day gift to the girls, just in time for our trip to Rangeley. They spent over an hour in their bags the day they got them, with Adam next to them in his sleeping bag (which he's had since he was ten). Apparently it's very fun to zip and unzip, and stick your feet out, and roll around, and cover your head so only your eyes peek out. It's so much fun, in fact, that I think we might be ready to try camping this summer. {Oh dear, did I really just say that?}

The other day, inspired by a book we had been reading, Grace decided to start her own animal rescue club. She got together all of her animal guidebooks, favorite animal friends, exploring tools, and fairy books (not animal related, but must be with us at all times). She even made a special sign for her door, all by herself. In case you can't decipher 6-year-old spelling, it reads: "2 people only. Brown eyes only. WAIT." I am pretty sure all of this was to include me and exclude Tess. I eventually convinced her that her club should be open to everyone, but I still love the sign.

The high on Saturday reached almost 50 degrees!! To celebrate, the girls wore sunglasses, and rain pants instead of snow pants. Huzzah! We took a leisurely walk at the park, interrupted by episodes of puddle-jumping and choruses of, "I love mud!" (For the record, I do NOT love mud, but I do love "warm" weather in February.)

Today we headed down to the Boston area with a friend to visit our other good friends who recently moved there. A day in the city! It was very exciting. After a fair amount of time playing in their cool city apartment, we walked three blocks to a busy city square. We had a fancy city lunch (crepes!) followed by playing on a nice city playground, topped off with the purchase of several amazing cupcakes at a funky city bakery.
Doing city things was very fun, but the best part of the day was spending time with our friends. Hopefully we'll be able to head back to the big city very soon. We miss them.

This week is "February vacation" in Maine. I am pretty sure this school break was instituted as a way for lucky Mainers to escape to Florida for a few days during what feels like the longest month of the year. Those of stuck here in Maine are left to find ways to occupy ourselves without freezing our toes off or slowly succumbing to boredom. Luckily for us, we were invited to join some friends at an L.L.Bean-owned cabin up north on Rangeley Lake. We ice skated across the frozen lake (all the way out to an island!), played in the snow, laughed with good friends by the fire, and even saw a moose!
I guess being "stuck" in Maine for February vacation isn't so bad after all.

Thursday on the way to school, Grace announced, "B. is my boyfriend." Totally surprised, I responded, "What does that mean?" "It means I want to marry him," she said. Thinking on my feet, I replied, "I like B., but you might change your mind about marrying him, and that's okay." Grace considered this, then stated, "Yeah, but I'll still like him." She then proceeded to tell me about how she had taken a lot of time to make him a present — a pinecone with a fern tied around it. When she gave it to him, he tossed it onto the ground.
I told her he probably just doesn't like pinecones.

In the photo, she's holding the "Love Box" she made me and Adam for Valentine's Day. It's a strawberry container, covered in pink paper and filled with treasures like half-finished knitting projects and a plastic bag. Very sweet, but I would have been happy with a pinecone, too! :)

Some excerpts from Tess, during bedtime tonight while I was rubbing her tummy (clearly she needed some time to wind down!):
"Pigs cannot dress up."
"I wish we had eyes on our fingers, so we could find things in the dark."
"When is the grass going to be green?"
"Please give Gracie the biggest kiss and hug."
{And yes, I do have about a million clips in my hair in this photo. We had been playing beauty parlor!}
