Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

We've gone through another season of visiting Toots as often as possible. This summer, Grace was able to read the flavor choices all by herself, and Tess was able to order all by herself (except that she's not actually tall enough to see over the counter). Thankfully, they are years away from being able to drive — otherwise they wouldn't need me at all!

Farm animals, fiddle music, and crafts? Yeah, that was pretty much awesome.

Fall, I think I love you already.

Yesterday we went apple picking with friends after school. Pulling the apples off the trees is fun and all, but not nearly as fun as immediately eating the apples (which Grace managed to do despite a major tooth handicap).

My littlest monkey has not been very cooperative lately about getting her picture taken. Perhaps she's just gotten tired of the mamarazzi, or maybe she's just being four. At any rate, I miss seeing her sweet little smile in my photos. But on Sunday at the beach, I was able to catch her just having fun. It's nice to be able to share that sweet smile with you again.

On Sunday we visited Reid State Park, near Bath, for the very first time. It was strikingly beautiful and we were wonderfully entertained, even though our feet went numb from standing in the surf for too long. Apparently a faraway hurricane was causing some abnormally large waves, which was very, verythrilling for our two little excitement junkies. Grace was compelled to do about one thousand cartwheels and several happy-dances. Tess liked to stand at the edge of the water, willing it towards her, then she would run away screaming when it actually reached her. It was awesome.

These two really love each other. Or they really love the deck at Gritty's. I'm not completely sure.

What does one do in Maine on a September Saturday when it's in the low 70's? One heads to the beach, of course! It was high tide, and the beach was about two feet wide, which was hilarious and wonderful all at once. The girls made ice cream cones and swam with their boogie boards. I ate ice cream cones and waded in a tiny bit to watch the ocean shenanigans. There's pretty much no way I'm swimming in the Maine ocean in September, even if it is in the 70's.

If they're going to pull each other in the wagon, really fast up and down the rocky driveway, I'm glad that they at least were smart enough to wear their helmets. And their gardening gloves (?).
