This morning, Tess made a list of the things she wanted to do today for "Mommy Day." The list went like this:
1. Play all day long
2. Do puzzles
3. Eat lunch (12:00)
4. Play with Penny outside
5. Pick up Grace (3:00)
We managed to accomplish everything on the list, plus Tess made her own lunch. It was oatmeal with cranberries, cream, and maple syrup. And she enjoyed sitting on the counter so much that she stayed there to eat, too. Mommy day is pretty cool.

Oh, dear me. These two are hilarious with their dressing up (legwarmers?!) and performing. This particular show involved one sister lying on the floor while the other sister ran around her in circles. Many, many circles. And then there was much laughter and many bows. And then more running in circles. You get the picture — we're really ready for spring.

After dinner last night, my girls came running down the stairs with armfuls of valentine's for me. They were dressed in heart shirts and heart tights, and they were bouncing off the walls, filled with the excitement of the day. Then they presented me with lovingly decorated heart-shaped cookies that they had made with their dad while I was out of town. That was pretty sweet.

The next best thing to having a weekend home in the mountains is having a friend with a friend with a weekend home in the mountains! We spent last weekend in Rangeley, Maine with friends and it was amazing. On Saturday we went skiing at Saddleback — actually, Grace and her friend took a 2-hour lesson, Adam snowboarded, our friends skied, and Tess and I supervised and waved from the lodge. Our determined little powerhouse named Grace did an excellent job (it was her second time on skies), and we practically had to drag her off the mountain when the day was done. I think I'm going to have to start saving my pennies for our very own weekend home in the mountains…

This was the scene after dinner last night, when both girls refused to take a bath because they needed to do their "homework." Tess was working on a new workbook about shapes, and Grace was acting as her teacher. Grace was also working on the optional "math mayhem" homework she receives each Monday. It's the only homework she ever gets, and she insists on completing it Monday night even thought it's not due until Friday. The kid loves a challenge — and besides, who doesn't love math homework that involves a dictionary?!

Penny loves the snow. She runs and jumps and spins around, and sticks her nose straight down into it. Yes, she probably hates wearing a sweater (after all, her big sister doesn't have to), and for a southern girl, she's pretty hardy. But the poor dog ends up with such terrible snowballs stuck to her fur that I make her wear a sweater to protect as much of her fur as possible. Because, believe me, Penny does not want to have to miss out on any of the winter fun.
