Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

Our little pipsqueak suddenly knows the alphabet! We've been working on it off and on for a while now, singing the song, writing letters, and doing the alphabet train puzzle. And up until recently, Tess has always needed a considerable amount of help. But one day last week, she suddenly could sing the entire alphabet song all by herself (although she does sometimes go straight from P to W). And on Thursday she did the entire alphabet train puzzle all by herself. And being able to do something all by herself makes this little girl very happy indeed.

On Friday, Grace asked if she could ride Sonny, a Belgian cross and the second biggest horse in the barn. She looks truly tiny next to the big, gentle horse, and when she stood on the stool, she still couldn't brush his back. But our little ball of courage was completely unfazed by all of this and went through her entire lesson with a huge smile. I love that kid.

There are very few things better than a new book and a cozy fire on a Sunday evening. Except maybe a book with your very own name in the title: Tess the Sea Turtle Fairy. Life is good, indeed.

On Saturday we went sledding with friends in the fresh, fluffy snow. It was really fun. Everyone took part — even the grownups. Grace and her friend liked to slide down together, and Tess just liked zooming downhill. In fact, when it was time to go, she didn't want to leave. But not to worry, it appears that this winter is never going to end…

  • Last week, Grace decided to read while eating at the dinner table. (And we decided not to stop her. Which we will probably regret later.):

And then, when it was time for bed, she was sitting in the middle of the floor reading:

I am guessing the next step will be hiding under the covers with a flashlight, but she hasn't thought of that — yet.

Last week we went to the library and Grace chose two books: one called Iditarod Dream (more on that another day…) and one about the horse Seabiscuit. Tess chose several books, her favorite of which is about apples. At the end, there is a recipe for applesauce and instructions for a fun apple craft. Every day since we first read that book, Tess has requested applesauce for dinner. So today, while Grace had a friend over, Tess and I had our apple day. She counted out the apples, washed them, helped operate the slicer/corer, and put the pieces in the pan. She measured out the maple syrup, added the apple cider, and shook in some cinnamon. Then she sat by the stove and stirred. Her efforts were well worth it (and I think I'm going to have to make applesauce with maple syrup from now on!).

Next we did the craft, which was making star prints using an apple core cut in half. Pretty cool. And for those of you on our mailing list, you may very well be seeing one of these in your mailbox soon!

Every February break, we travel to Boston for a day with friends to visit friends who live there. Mostly we just enjoy being together, but walking around the city and going out to lunch — and decorating cupcakes! — is pretty cool, too.

Grace has started a hangman craze at our house. Only it's not hangman, it's hangsurfboard (above) or hangflower (below). Because hanging a man just isn't peaceful and Quakerly. And that's okay, because the game is fun no matter what you decide to hang — especially when you're guessing words like "adogable."

Even Tess can play — she tells Adam what she wants her sentence to be, then he writes out the spaces for her and tells her where to write the letters when I guess them. And she's surprisingly tricky! I mean, who would ever guess, "You are my ornament"?
