Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

Yesterday, after getting their hair cut at the real salon, the girls came home and created their own hair salon. It was called "Grace's Beauty, an award-winning place." Tess was the first customer, and after spending some time reading a "magazine" (toy catalog) with foil in her hair, she emerged with blue hair (it was a wig, thankfully!). I was laughing so hard that I didn't get photos of that moment, so sorry! The next customer was Johnny Rock n' Roll, who came in with long blond hair (another wig!) and left with a nicely shaven bald head – this was a true miracle because Grace "shaved" it with a hole punch!

You guys, I live in a house full of crazy people. But they really make me laugh.

A story by Grace (unedited) 9/29/11

Rain rain go away come again another day!
It had rained. It had poured.
My grandma brot the rain with her, all the way from New Jersey!

For two whol days! I was sitting at the table at scool. I looked out the window…Rain, make that three days!

I woke up the next day RAIN, make that four.
    Pitter patter.
    Sigh…

    Trees wilting, rivers floding.
My Grandma left, I guse she forgot to take it with her.
Gloomy the next day, make that five. Brrrr…

I honestly don't think Penny minded her fairy outfit at all. She just wants to be included in whatever we're doing. I love that dog.

Saturday was the annual Halloween show at the barn where Grace takes riding lessons. This year, Grace decided to be low-key and dress up as a devil. So I had the brilliant idea of dressing the horse as an angel — an old white sheet, some fairy wings from our dress-up bin, and a pipecleaner halo. Genius! At least, I thought it was pretty good — until I saw Superhorse. Now THAT's genius.

After spending five hours at the horse barn, which included stall-to-stall trick-or-treating, our toes were frozen, but Grace was one happy, horse-loving kid. Just look at that smile!

As we do every year, we trick-or-treated on Main Street in Freeport with Grace's oldest friend. It was wonderful and fun as always, and we appreciated the early timing of the event (4-6pm!) and the sunshine. Grace loved running down the street with her friend, and comparing candy.

What I loved most of all this year, though, was watching little bat-Tess fly solo a bit. She still mostly held my (or Adam's) hand, and but she was much more willing to chase after Grace and walk up to the candy-givers by herself. And she was so very excited, and so into the whole event. It was really wonderful to see her spread her little bat wings a bit.

Each year, the kindergartners and first- and second-graders work together to create a "spooky path" in the woods outside their classrooms. The kids work together on decorations — like tombstones and hanging pipe-cleaner spiders — and then they stand along the path in their costumes and act spooky as the other students parade through the woods. This annual event began when Grace's was in kindergarten, but this year was extra-special because it was Tess's first year to participate in creating the spooky path, and Grace's last year. It was really a treat to get to see cute little bat-Tess act scary ("You look yummy! Grrrrrrr…") and to see Grace be witchy with her friends.

Tonight was the annual bonfire for the preschool and kindergarten classes (the last one that we'll be invited to…sigh). We got there early, and Tess decided she would be the official "welcomer." Kindergarten has already done wonders for that child.

The girls drew the faces on the pumpkins, then we all worked together to scoop them out and do the carving, and VOILA! Now we have two awesome, spooky-cute jack-o-lanterns on our front steps!

In typical Grace and Tess style, they have taken leaf-jumping to another level. They like to rake a big pile of leaves over to the slide and then slide down into it head first. But even that is not always enough — of course, it is even more fun to slide down into each other, or to pull each other's boots off while sliding. Really, the possibilities are endless.
