4:00 pm: As I type, the girls are playing – quietly – in Tess’s room. With the door closed. I am not sure which makes me more nervous – the fact that they are quiet, or the fact that the door is closed and I am not sure what’s going on in there. However, I…

Grace and Tess are playing so well together lately. Part of the reason for this is that Tess is very easygoing and willing to please – so she eagerly takes part in Grace’s shenanigans. She is a willing participant in games of throw-cans-of-clay-down-the-stairs, or balancing-on-tupperware, or running-in-circles-around-Mommy, or let’s-pull-each-other-in-the-suitcase. Or, my personal favorite, a game…

Tess loves her big sister, and thinks she’s really cool. Grace clearly uses this to her advantage. However, Tess is also not afraid to let her big sister know when she has hit her limit and is no longer willing to cooperate with Grace’s antics. I am very thankful for this.

Baby sister will play. On big sister’s bed, and with big sister’s toys… All while resisting mommy’s attempts to get her dressed – a behavior learned from the all-knowing, and much loved, big sister. I am so glad the girls are discovering the joy of books. Grace loves to ‘read’ to Tess, and she loves to ‘read’ certain books to herself. Recently she brought one of her favorites, Frog and Toad are Friends, on our breakfast outing. Adam and I were in the car, happily chatting away when we…

By our two little exhibitionists… (Please note: This photo was not at all staged. This little show was Grace’s idea – a variation on the pre-bath "Doin’ the ‘Nudenik’ Dance" routine. And of course, little Tess played along beautifully!)

Grace and I have spent the past three afternoons decorating our first gingerbread people (and trees) of the year. Tess was content to stand on a chair and watch us – until she saw Grace eat an M&M. Of course, she wanted to eat one too, although she had no idea what it was, and…

"Grace, what are you thankful for?" "My baby sister." "I think she’s thankful for you, too."

This morning, I told Tess it was time to go to the store. So she found her shoes, all by herself, and tried to put them on. She couldn’t quite manage it, but she did get a good leg workout. And besides, I’m in no hurry for her to master such skills yet. Tess seems…

Oh wait, it’s actually only day #6. My, how time does not fly when your kids are sick! Grace is better, but now Tess is suffering. I’m not sure which is worse – a three-and-three-quarters year old who sobs and tells you how badly her throat hurts, or a seventeen-month old who cries a very…
