Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

  • On Sunday we finally made the big one-mile trek down our road to the Christmas tree farm. The farm opens the day after Thanksgiving, but we were always finding excuses not to visit it early on — too muddy, too crowded, not warm enough, etc. We suddenly realized that if were going to have any…

  • Our walk the other day started out so lovely — the girls had asked to push their strollers, each with their current favorite animal "daughter" along for the ride. The novelty of this was enough to make Tess walk eagerly along the path, instead of asking to be carried. There were many happy moments, and…

  • We took the girls to vote with us yesterday, because we wanted them to be a part of history, to be able to say that they were there when this country finally decided to choose hope and vote for change. They were there when we proved that anyone can truly be anything they want to…

  • I won't be posting this week, while we enjoy a visit from "Bobby and Motmaw" (aka Grandpa and Grandma). So far we've hiked Bradbury Mountain, baked awesome Halloween cookies, and enjoyed several "performances" by Grace and Tess. Good times.  You can bet I'll be back on Friday night with some Halloween photos!

  •   We've visited Wolfe's Neck Farm in Freeport twice in the past ten days — once just to visit the animals, and once to take a hayride to the pumpkin patch with some of Grace's school friends. It's pretty fun to get to wander the rows of pumpkins to find the perfect one…

  •     We spent most of last weekend outside, enjoying the amazing fall colors and sunny, crisp weather. We hiked at two state parks, played on the beach, caught falling leaves, played silly games, and admired the amazing views.

  •   A petting zoo, apple-cider pressing, running in the grass with friends, bright sunshine and an amazing view. Just another fall day in Maine. (Come on, admit it — you wish you were here!)

  •     It is a now a tradition for us to get ice cream at Toots on the last day they are open each year (as well as on the first day!). So on Sunday, we donned our fleece jackets and headed out for a sweet treat, and said goodbye to our animal friends. This…

  • Last week, we spent every spare moment with my 90-year-old grandmother who came all the way from Texas, along with my aunt and uncle, just to see us.  It was a memorable treat to take my grandmother to our local apple orchard, made even more special by the fact that it was her very first…

  • The other day, I decided to take stock of the girls' winter gear so that I can actually be prepared this year when the temperature plummets. The previous two years I was totally caught off guard by the chilly weather when it arrived, probably because I was living in denial. But this year, I refuse…
