Our sweet Gracie has shied away from group sports for quite some time — actually, forever. And while I love that she's into horseback riding, I was thrilled when she finally agreed to give soccer a try. There is a very informal after-school program, where all ages (K – 8) practice together for a while, then the kids in kindergarten through second grade play a scrimmage together. Grace loves running around with the other kids, and the low-key approach suits her just fine. So when her coach (who, as luck would have it, is also the assistant first-grade teacher) announced that her team would be playing a real game against another school, Grace responded that there was no way she would participate. However, when the day came, she marched right out there with her friends and played with a smile on her face — and she even made a few great passes! We were so proud. And now we may actually have to buy that kid some real soccer shoes.
