Once again, we joined Grace's best buddy in Freeport for trick-or-treating at the shops along Main Street. We had prepared Tess for the event by teaching her what to say, and she was excited to get started, although she didn't know exactly why. She hesitated at our first stop (see below), but as luck would have it, the second store we visited was handing out M&M's — her very favorite treat! (and the only candy she's ever had) — so she quickly learned that this Halloween thing is a pretty good deal. Grace, who had attended a Halloween party at school earlier in the day, immediately got into the spirit of things, excitedly shouting "Trick-or-treat!" as she entered each store. The next day, Tess carried her bag of "special treats" with her wherever she went (including the coffee shop), and then hasn't mentioned it since. And Grace didn't even complain when I removed most of the candy from her bag and told her she could have one piece of the remaining candy each day, dependent upon good behavior. As it turns out, all she really wanted anyway was the gum. For these girls, the novelty of running around in a costume collecting candy still outweighs the joy of the actual candy — but I have a feeling that next year might be a little different.
