Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

IMG_0006

I swear I stood in front of the chicken coop for a full two minutes this afternoon, shocked to see THREE eggs in the nest box. I would have been no more surprised if someone had just informed me that Grace had been nominated to the Supreme Court (by the way, she does want to be president, so she can "take care of all of the animals in the world," but that's a story for another time). I knew that Sally and Penelope had started laying (Penelope laid her first one on Saturday, while sitting up on the roost) but I truly have no idea where the third egg came from, as none of the other hens look ready to me (but then again, we chicken farmers don't know everything). I didn't let the chickens out this morning as usual because it was raining, and when I opened up the coop at lunchtime — surprise! — there were the eggs. And miraculously, our smart little hens laid their eggs exactly where I wanted them to — maybe chicken farming isn't so tough after all!
