Navigating the hilly terrain of motherhood

Yesterday, when Adam arrived home, we surprised the girls by wheeling out two new bikes that had been hidden in the garage – a tricycle for birthday girl Tess, and a two-wheeler with training wheels for Grace. Grace was immediately thrilled and promptly took a ride down the driveway, and even down the road a bit. Not only is the bike purple, with streamers hanging from the handlebars – it also makes her feel like a big kid.

Sweet Tess’s tricycle has a pushbar so that we can push her around until she figures out how to use the pedals herself. I had her test drive this trike at the toy store a couple of times, and each time she sat down and then said, “All done!” However, she pointed excitedly at the tricycles every time we went to the store, and I am determined to teach her how to ride one, so her lack of enthusiasm for pedaling did not deter me. When she received the gift, she enjoyed being pushed around, but was distressed by the fact that she did not have a helmet like her big sister (note the hand on her head for emphasis). So, today I bought her a helmet. I mean, the kid does have a point – safety first, right?!
